A novel of suspense, family ties, and twisted passions from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Obsession…

The Bodine ranch and resort in western Montana is a family business, an idyllic spot for vacationers. A little over thirty thousand acres and home to four generations, it’s kept running by Bodine Longbow with the help of a large staff, including new hire Callen Skinner. There was another member of the family once: Bodine’s aunt, Alice, who ran off before Bodine was born. She never returned, and the Longbows don’t talk about her much. The younger ones, who never met her, quietly presume she’s dead. But she isn’t. She is not far away, part of a new family, one she never chose—and her mind has been shattered…

When a bartender leaves the resort late one night, and Bo and Cal discover her battered body in the snow, it’s the first sign that danger lurks in the mountains that surround them. The police suspect Cal, but Bo finds herself trusting him—and turning to him as another woman is murdered and the Longbows are stunned by Alice’s sudden reappearance. The twisted story she has to tell about the past—and the threat that follows in her wake—will test the bonds of this strong family, and thrust Bodine into a darkness she could never have imagined.

  1. Disappointed I’ve always been a big Nora Roberts fan, but this book fell way short for me. The plot seemed very contrived, the dialogue bogged down. I found it very hard to connect with the main characters other than Alice. For me it seemed more like a quick book thrown together just to put a book out there. Honest Illusions or Birthright, those were great books. Where is the old Nora?

  2. Not Nora’s Best I usually love Nora Roberts, but this is not one of her best. The positive: as she always does, she created an intricately detailed world, with well-developed characters. The negative: it dragged on and on and on. And the predictable ending was… hurried, poorly described, and improbable. Too many subplots not resolved, And, I’m sorry, but this is the last time I’m paying 14.99 for a Kindle book. If I didn’t think it was unethical to return a book I actually read, I would have returned this…

  3. It would make one’s heart beat fast! Unputdownable. I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. This is another amazing novel by Nora Roberts that combines several intriguing and very interesting plot lines with a terrifying mystery, unforgettable characters, a multi-generational family, and a very smart horse. Do not let the size of this novel scare you – I could not put this book down! I cried and I laughed as I read, and almost felt like I was a part of the main family described in the novel.
