In a pulls-no-punches essay intended to provoke rational discussion, Stephen King sets down his thoughts about gun violence in America. Anger and grief in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School are palpable in this urgent piece of writing, but no less remarkable are King’s keen thoughtfulness and composure as he explores the contours of the gun-control issue and constructs his argument for what can and should be done. King’s earnings from the sale of this essay will go to the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Stephen King is the author of 11/22/63, Under the Dome, Carrie, The Shining, and many other bestselling works.

From my cold dead hands … While I was reading this piece I went and found some alarming statistics about the number of applications for purchase of a firearm had been made in the US in 2012. The figure was truly staggering. It’s all well and good for Stephen King to argue that there isn’t a culture of violence in the US, but that doesn’t remove the sense people like me who live in other country’s have that America is one violent place.Â
Guns by Stephen King Stephen King, whether writing fiction or non-fiction, certainly has a crafted way with words. This particular topic, guns and gun control, is a slippery uphill road. King brings a clear eyed review of pro’s and con’s. I was surprised with his affinity for guns and yet he puts it down like it should be- who really needs a multiple (greater than 8) shot gun? Anything more than that is for killing people, not deer or elk or rabbits or ducks.
Loved it Some very thought provoking comments. Have to say it changed my thoughts on several issues. As a hunter and gun owner I understand both sides of the issue and support each.
