[Read by Robertson Dean]

The basis for the film starring Academy Award nominee Will Smith, I Am Legend is a classic of horror and suspense. First published in 1954, I Am Legend was Richard Matheson’s first SF novel, and established his reputation as a pre-eminent figure in SF.

In I Am Legend, a terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive are transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Robert Neville is the last living man on earth. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville’s blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. How long can one man survive in a world of vampires? One of the most influential vampire novels of the 20th century, I Am Legend regularly appears on the “10 Best” lists of numerous critical studies of the horror genre. As Richard Matheson’s third novel, it was first marketed as science fiction (for although written in 1954, the story takes place in a future 1976). A terrible plague has decimated the world, and those who were unfortunate enough to survive have been transformed into blood-thirsty creatures of the night. Except, that is, for Robert Neville. He alone appears to be immune to this disease, but the grim irony is that now he is the outsider. He is the legendary monster who must be destroyed because he is different from everyone else. Employing a stark, almost documentary style, Richard Matheson was one of the first writers to convince us that the undead can lurk in a local supermarket freezer as well as a remote Gothic castle. His influence on a generation of bestselling authors–including Stephen King and Dean Koontz–who first read him in their youth is, well, legendary. –Stanley Wiater

  1. I Am Legend *SLIGHT SPOILER WARNING*

  2. A Solid Last Man on Earth Book (with Vampires!) This is a fantastic novella from a brilliant writer. It was way ahead of its time and Matheson inspired so many giants in the horror field, including Stephen King. This book in particular is one of the main contributing forces that gave rise to the zombie genre. I wouldn’t say this is a literary masterpiece so much as an amazing story that is solidly written. The premise is dazzling and it kept me turning the pages. I will refrain from giving it the fifth star because some of Neville’s thinking…

  3. Richard Matheson is legend I’ll say this; I’m glad I saw the movie before I read the book. If I’d read the book before I’d seen the film I would have been so peed-off at the hack job the movie was. At least I have the ability to say it was a mildly entertaining, if not regurgitated zombie movie.
