Firstborns rule society. Secondborns are the property of the government. Thirdborns are not tolerated. Long live the Fates Republic.
On Transition Day, the second child in every family is taken by the government and forced into servitude. Roselle St. Sismode’s eighteenth birthday arrives with harsh realizations: she’s to become a soldier for the Fate of Swords military arm of the Republic during the bloodiest rebellion in history, and her elite firstborn mother is happy to see her go.
Televised since her early childhood, Roselle’s privileged upbringing has earned her the resentment of her secondborn peers. Now her decision to spare an enemy on the battlefield marks her as a traitor to the state.
But Roselle finds an ally—and more—in fellow secondborn conscript Hawthorne Trugrave. As the consequences of her actions ripple throughout the Fates Republic, can Roselle create a destiny of her own? Or will her Fate override everything she fights for—even love?
Brilliantly written! Amy Bartol is the queen of creating captivating and riveting worlds and has done so again with Secondborn. I was immediately and completely pulled into Amy’s new dystopian world and just couldn’t put it down. The world of Secondborn is so well written and descriptive that you feel as if you are there living the experience with the amazing characters. Wow, the characters…. I can not possibly describe how interesting and complex they are. Some you will love, admire and root for and some you…

Bartol created a dazzling tale of class discrimination in a dystopian setting and crammed the pages with action, deceit, a class war of epic proportions and a promising love story.
Ok, people are saying this book has a CLIFFHANGER, and I don’t get it… Let me just start by saying that I, LOVED, this book!!!! I LOVED IT. It enthralled me. It swept me away. I read it in one sitting. LITERALLY one sitting. I got up for a drink twice, and the rest of the time I spent trying to leave my nails alone while sitting on the edge of my couch. Roselle is a no nonsense heroine who doesn’t really follow anything or anyone but her own convictions, the science fiction world is exceptionally well developed and interesting, and while the plot up to 50% was…
