“Listening to stories gives you many lives, telling them dims loneliness.” (Marcela Serrano)
Nine Chilean women from vastly different backgrounds have been brought together by their beloved therapist, Natasha, to talk about their lives and help each other heal. From a teenage computer whiz confronting her sexual identity, to a middle-aged recluse who prefers the company of her dog over that of most humans, the women don’t have much in common on the surface. And yet as they tell their stories, unlikely common threads are discovered, bonds are formed, and lives are transformed. The women represent the many cultural, racial, and social groups that modern Chile is composed of – from housekeeper to celebrity television personality – and together their stories form a pastiche that is at times achingly sad, and at other times funny and inspiring. This is an intricately woven, beautifully rendered tale of the universal bonds between women from one of Latin America’s most celebrated novelists.
Meet 10 amazing women Enjoyed the in-depth monologue by each of the strong, Chilean women. Each one had at least something I could relate to. This book would ignite a powerful conversation at a Book Club. Loses nothing in the translation. Thank you for bringing this remarkable author closer to our world. Goes to show the power of literacy. It’s like getting 10 stories in one cover. I feel I want to bring all ten into my living room and talk some more. I made 10 new friends. Some more like me than others. Issues…
Very Thought Provoking this is a story of 9 women who have all seen one, their psychologist. They each in turn tell their own stories, everyone of them different and yet alike. Each chapter introduces us to a new woman, culminating in the last chapter where the psychologists assistant tells them the story of her.I found the book to be fascinating. It was originally written in Spanish as the story takes place in Chili. The translation was excellent. I do so enjoy thought provoking stories such as this one. Where…
Excellent read! I was skeptical about trying this author; I usually play it safe and stick to the same writers. I am so glad I gave this book a whirl. Couldn’t put it down. Each woman’s story is fascinating and meaty. Two thumbs up-you won’t be disappointed!!
