The Sydney Rye series of mysteries feature a strong female protagonist and her rescue dog, Blue. It is recommended for the 18+ who enjoy some violence, don’t mind dirty language, and are up for a dash of sex. Not to mention an awesome, rollicking good mystery!
UNLEASHED is the first book in Emily Kimelman’s best-selling Sydney Rye series of mysteries. This audiobook is narrated by Sonja Field.
When the series begins Sydney Rye is named Joy Humbolt. She does not like people telling her what to do, so it comes as no surprise that she was just fired from her last job. When she buys Charlene Miller’s dog-walking business on Manhattan’s exclusive Upper East Side, it seems like the perfect fit: Quiet environment, minimal contact with people.
But then one of her clients turns up dead, and Charlene disappears. Rumors say Charlene was having an affair with the victim–and of course, everyone assumes Joy must know where she is. Joy begins to look into the crime, first out of curiosity then out of anger when there is another murder and threats start to come her way.
When police detective Mulberry is assigned to the case, Joy finds a kindred spirit–cynical and none-too-fond of the human race. As they dig deep into the secrets of Manhattan’s elite, they not only get closer to the killer but also to a point of no return. One last murder sends Joy Humbolt hurtling over the edge. Her only chance of survival is to become Sydney Rye.

Not as advertised Ok, this is the 2nd book by this author & in this series that I’ve read (well I did not get all the way thru this particular one). I like mysteries and I like dogs – so this seems like a series for me. I had read one of the Sydney Rye books from later in the series and was, at best, lukewarm about it. I thought maybe if I started with #1 I would get some backstory that would make the series more interesting. Too bad I was wrong. I didn’t care for the main character at the series midpoint and…
Wish I could give it 0 stars A bit spoilerish comments follow. OK. I am NOT a prude. I do not have a problem reading stories which include very descriptive sex. I also do not have a problem with “foul” language. I must admit I use some it myself. However, when I read a book, any book, the story has to really grab my attention. All I can say about this book is that I’m happy it was free. Otherwise, I’d be looking for a refund. The main character in this story, Joy Humbold, comes across as a whiny, drunk, who has no…
Needs a muzzle OK, I’m no prude. A little rough language never kept me from enjoying a good book. But this puppy isn’t even paper trained. The language is gratuitously vulgar and the crime gratuitously gross. I didn’t finish the book because it just wasn’t worth the slog through the dreck to get to the end. I have plenty of books on my iPad. I don’t have to stick with any book that doesn’t capture my interest in the first four or five chapters. This one didn’t.
