Based on the popular international collaborative art project, Julia Kay’s Portrait Party, this book features hundreds of portraits in multiple mediums and styles teamed with tips and insights on the artistic process.
The human face is one of the most important subjects for artists, no matter their chosen medium. Pulling from 50,000 works of portraiture created by the artists of the international online collaborative project Julia Kay’s Portrait Party, Portrait Revolution presents a new look at this topic—one that doesn’t limit itself to one medium, one style, one technique, or one artist. By presenting portraits in pencil, pen, charcoal, oils, watercolors, acrylics, pastels, mixed media, digital media, collage, and more, Julia Kay and co. demonstrate the limitless possibilities available to aspiring artists or even to professional artists who are looking to expand creatively.
Along with works in almost every conceivable medium, Portrait Revolution shines a spotlight on different portrait-making techniques and styles (featuring everything from realism to abstraction). With tips, insights, and recommendations from accomplished portrait artists from around the globe, this all-in-one inspiration resource provides everything you’ll need to kick-start your own portrait-making adventure.
Bravo! Excellence has marked every stage of the Julia Kay Portrait Party experience. Why should the release of this community’s first book be any exception? I knew it would be a great testament to the hard work and good will of it’s creators all over the planet, but the level of care put into making this and making it right has surpassed even reasonable expectations. Another Bravo for Julia Kay and the community she has inspired and gathered together from around the world. What a privilege to have…
A master class in art-making, storytelling and community. You’ll want more than one. Just reading PORTRAIT REVOLUTION feels like a master class. In what, though? In drawing, certainly: its chapter breakdown would lend itself to art schools and community workspaces, or online classes in which your fellow students are also your workshop peers. As a non-artist who’s often lived with those for whom making art is important, I learned a lot about media, process, the steps that go into even the simplest portrait.
An Inspirational Slice of Cake from the Portrait Party I can recommend Portrait Revolution without reservation to anyone with a penchant for the visual arts in general and portraiture in particular. The book is a collection of selected pieces which were created as part of Julia Kay’s Portrait Party, an online project of over 1000 artists which began in 2010 and is ongoing. It’s not exactly a how-to book, but with anecdotes and reflections on the creative process from the artists themselves, it’s more than just a coffee-table collection of artwork…
