  1. Great overview of holy men & women who have formed the faith Bishop Hughes presents the spiritual history of the church through the lives of its leaders. Each chapter foucuses on a different spiritual master and includes a brief biography, the context of their life and teaching within the church and the world, and how they influenced the spiritual growth of the church. Both educational and personally challenging — highly recommended.

  2. Worth Reading and Rereading I stumbled across this book shortly after it was published, and read it in a weekend. I found the approachable style appealing as well as the wonderful suggestions regarding what the individual seeking to deepen his or her spiritual life could learn from the “spiritual masters”. However, I find myself returning to it again and again to read individual chapters. Each time, I find something of value.
