This program is narrated by acclaimed reader Bahni Turpin, whose past work includes The Hate U Give and The Underground Railroad

In Children of Blood and Bone, Tomi Adeyemi conjures a stunning world of dark magic and danger in her West African-inspired fantasy debut.

They killed my mother.

They took our magic.

They tried to bury us.

Now we rise.

Zélie Adebola remembers when the soil of Orïsha hummed with magic. Burners ignited flames, Tiders beckoned waves, and Zélie’s Reaper mother summoned forth souls.

But everything changed the night magic disappeared. Under the orders of a ruthless king, maji were killed, leaving Zélie without a mother and her people without hope.

Now Zélie has one chance to bring back magic and strike against the monarchy. With the help of a rogue princess, Zélie must outwit and outrun the crown prince, who is hell-bent on eradicating magic for good.

Danger lurks in Orïsha, where snow leoponaires prowl and vengeful spirits wait in the waters. Yet the greatest danger may be Zélie herself as she struggles to control her powers – and her growing feelings for an enemy.

  1. Amazing. Couldn’t put it down. I received this today after reading the preview and preordering it. Starting with Chapter 7, I started reading it at about 7 this evening and just finished it at 11:30.It is a gripping story that moves at a relentless pace through a complex plot filled with rich characters.I understand this has been optioned for a movie, and I can see why–the story and characters are so vivid, the worldbuilding so complex, that I can see this following the path of Star Wars or Hunger…

  2. AMAZING start to a new Fantasy series!!! (NO SPOILERS) This book literally hits the ground running!! Picked it up a few days ago per a co-worker’s recommendation and finished it before the weekend was even over! The novel immediately ropes you into its journey/adventure on par w/Lord of the Rings and its storyline evolves before you via character-focused chapters as enjoyed in Game of Thrones! It creates a world where magic once existed and must be resurrected to protect those that once wielded it. The cadence of the story is extremely…

  3. Amazing, Multi-layered Fantasy! I have been anticipating Children of Blood and Bone since I heard about it last fall. I was a little worried that I would be disappointed because I was looking forward to it so much. I finished it this morning and if anything, I was too reserved in my excitement. It is exactly the kind of sweeping fantasy that I love, and it has so many layers that give it much deeper meaning. I hate spoilers, so all I will say about the plot is that I love Tomi Adeyemi’s choices and where she took each of the…
