An unusual and original work of fantasy from the acclaimed author of Tea with the Black Dragon.
A contemporary man, John Thornburn (a meek, non-violent and unpredictable artist) and woman, Derval (his tough, confrontational, strong and warrior-like lover) time travel to ancient Ireland to avenge a Viking attack. Packed with fascinating details of historical time and place in Irish history and delicately balanced on the border between realism and fantasy, the story centers around one of the most famous and beautiful illuminated manuscripts in history, the legendary but entirely real Book of Kells. Celtic history blends with magical fantasy for a strange and immersive tale of adventure.
Five Stars I was sucked into a very exciting time by this book.
MacAvoy fan’s opinion I have been a MacAvoy fan for decades, and this was the first of her books that I ever read. The story is compelling, the characters are well-developed, and her writing style is excellent. If you are a fan of fantasy, Celtic mythology, and/or Irish history, you will enjoy The Book of Kells.
Great for those who like history and study Brigid Fascinating book. A lot of detailed Irish and Norse history and culture. The fiction is time travel. Well done. Multifaceted characters. Good plot. Particular fun for people into the Goddess Brigid.
