The actual story itself is good. However The actual story itself is good. However, 30% of the entire book is devoted to Ellison’s ceaseless whining, foul language, and “poor me” sob stories about things that happened to him 50 years ago. Ellison, let it go and grow up. The introduction(s) took me 2 days to wade through because of the incessant negativity. The actual script too me 15 minutes to read. I didn’t bother reading any of the iterations because I’d lost all respect for Ellison. Don’t waste your money or your time.
Absolutely worth the read. “The city on the edge of forever” IS one of my favorite episodes. I also enjoy reading Harlan Ellison. His works are full of surprises and, after reading this book, I can understand his anger at the reworking of his screenplay. His dialogue was elegant, and made me feel the anguish the Star Fleet men were feeling. If the tampered with work that aired was that good, imagine how we would have absorbed the conflicted emotions pouring out of Kirk and Spock (yes, he had emotions) during the H. E…
