Inspiration and Authority in the Middle Ages rethinks the role of prophecy in the Middle Ages by examining how professional theologians responded to new assertions of divine inspiration. Drawing on fresh archival research and detailed study of unpublished manuscript sources from the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, this volume argues that the task of defining prophetic authority became a crucial intellectual and cultural enterprise as university-trained theologians confronted prophetic claims from lay mystics, radical Franciscans, and other unprecedented visionaries. In the process, these theologians redescribed their own activities as prophetic by locating inspiration not in special predictions or ecstatic visions but in natural forms of understanding and in the daily work of ecclesiastical teaching and ministry. Instead of containing the spread of prophetic privilege, however, scholastic assessments of prophecy from Peter Lombard and Thomas Aquinas to Peter John Olivi and Nicholas Trevet opened space for claims of divine insight to proliferate beyond the control of theologians. By the turn of the fourteenth century, secular Italian humanists could lay claim to prophetic authority on the basis of their intellectual powers and literary practices. From Hugh of St Victor to Albertino Mussato, reflections on and debates over prophecy reveal medieval clerics, scholars, and reformers reshaping the contours of religious authority, the boundaries of sanctity and sacred texts, and the relationship of tradition to the new voices of the Late Middle Ages.

When her parents and twin brother die within weeks of each other, Alicia and her younger sister are left in the hands of an uncle who has brought them all to financial and social ruin. Desperate to save her family from debtor’s prison, Alicia vows to marry the first wealthy man to propose. She meets the dashing Lord Amesbury, and her heart whispers that this is the man she is destined to love, but his tainted past may forever stand in their way. Her choices in potential husbands narrow to either a scarred cripple with the heart of a poet, or a handsome rake with a deadly secret.
Cole Amesbury is tormented by his own ghosts, and believes he is beyond redemption, yet he cannot deny his attraction for the girl whose genuine goodness touches the heart he’d thought long dead. He fears the scars in his soul cut so deeply that he may never be able to offer Alicia a love that is true. When yet another bizarre mishap threatens her life, Alicia suspects the seemingly unrelated accidents that have plagued her loved ones are actually a killer’s attempt to exterminate every member of her family. Despite the threat looming over her, learning to love the stranger she married may pose the greatest danger to her heart. And Cole must protect Alicia from the killer who has been exterminating her family before she is the next target.

The eras their works depict range from the Stone Age to the late 20th century, while the places encompass many of the globe’s most fascinating locations. Equally diverse are the questions the collection explores. Where do works of historical fiction find their starting points? How are those seeds refined into story? Why does one milieu or era resonate for an author when others do not? What are the gifts and challenges of using the past as source? How do blocks and other obstacles refine or even transform an initial concept? Where does historical accuracy end and fictional power begin? How do authors today make a given moment in history compelling to contemporary readers and use the past to illuminate the present? In a series of brief and richly informative essays, the authors of STORIES OF INSPIRATION: HISTORICAL FICTION EDITION muse on all of these issues and more.
Illuminating the work, process and personalities of exceptional authors from around the world; investigating the intricate ties between past and present, fact and fiction; and celebrating the nature of the creative process itself, STORIES OF INSPIRATION: HISTORICAL FICTION EDITION will appeal to readers of literature and fiction, lovers of history and travel, and writers seeking inspiration for their own work.

A Quote for History: Historical Words, Uttered by the Famous, Infamous and Forgotten
Author Ivar Jonsson have created a great collection of some of the most important, famous and historical quotes. Those uttered by the great, as well as by the unknown. Interesting, fascinating and inspiring. Throughout history, great words spoken or written by brilliant minds have been cited and retold uncountable times. These quotes have been used to inspire as well as to amuse, to teach as well as to provoke thoughts. For as long as there have been books, there have also been writers to record these great words. Even in ancient times, people saw fit to make records of the proverbs and sayings that touched their hearts. Still today, there’s a great interest in quotes from great thinkers, artists and from the rich and famous; and in the possible applications there might be for them in this modern world. History also has a funny way of putting the words uttered in an interesting perspective. A statement that at it’s time seemed unimportant can with time gain huge fame, or infamy, all by the context in which history will place it.
