The Grace to Race: The Wisdom and Inspiration of the 80-Year-Old World Champion Triathlete Known as the Iron Nun

SISTER MADONNA BUDER is 80 years old, has run more than 340 triathlons, and doesn’t know what all the fuss is about. In The Grace to Race, she shares the no-nonsense spirit and deep faith that inspired her extraordinary journey from a prominent St. Louis family to a Catholic Convent and finally to championship finish lines all over the world. As a beautiful young woman, she became an elegant equestrian and accomplished amateur actress. But as she describes in this intimate memoir, she had a secret plan as early as 14: she wanted to devote her life to God. After being courted by the most eligible bachelors in her hometown, she chose a different path and became a Sister of the Good Shepherd. She lived a mostly cloistered life as a Nun until her late forties, when a Priest suggested she take a run on the beach. She dug up a pair of shorts in a pile of donated clothes, found a pair of second-hand tennis shoes, and had a second epiphany. This time, she discovered the spiritual joy of pushing her body to the limit and of seeing God’s natural world in all its splendor. More than thirty years later, she is known as the Iron Nun for all the triathlons she has won. Just five years ago, the age 75–79 category was created for her at the Hawaiian Ironman in Kona, where she completed a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full 26.2-mile marathon in record time. Now she has set her sights on a new goal: inaugurating another new Ironman age group, 80–84, in 2010.

Sister Madonna holds dozens of records, has broken dozens of bones, and tells of dozens of miracles and angels that propelled her to a far-flung race. “It is my faith that has carried me through life’s ups and downs,” she writes. “Whenever injured, I wait for the Lord to pick me up again and set me on my feet, confidently reminding Him, ‘God, you know, my intent is to keep running toward you.’”

The Grace to Race is the courageous story of a woman who broke with convention, followed her heart, and found her higher mission.

The Quotable Runner: Great Moments of Wisdom, Inspiration, Wrongheadedness, and Humor

“Keep this book close to you at all times. It can’t help but improve your spirits and your running.”—Runner’s World

By its very nature, running is extreme and pure, resulting in a great supply of extremely memorable quotes, jokes, barbs, and philosophical gems. The Quotable Runner gathers the best of these into one indispensable volume. Sir Roger Bannister compares running to classical drama. George Patton compares it to war. Bill Clinton finds it keeps him optimistic. And Oprah sums it up beautifully: “Running is the greatest metaphor for life, because you get out of it what you put into it.”

The Quotable Runner is like no other running book. Runners will read it again and again for inspiration, advice, and humor.

Martin Luther King, Jr., on Leadership: Inspiration and Wisdom for Challenging Times

Using the Civil Rights struggle as his historical perspective, the author has created a detailed and absorbing chronicle of Martin Luther King’s leadership during the most tumultuous period in America’s recent past.Leadership motivational speaker Donald T. Phillips, who has previously drawn organizational lessons for modern businesses from the careers of Abraham Lincoln and the Founding Fathers, turns to civil-rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. as a role model. A discussion of the Montgomery bus boycott, for example, draws out such principles as “Set goals and create a plan of action” and “Involve the people.” More effective as a self-help book for business than as a biography, it does provide a useful introduction to King’s life.

American Presidents in “Quotes”: Inspiration, Wit and Verbal Gaffes from the Leaders of the USA

Humorous and inspirational quotes from America’s 43 Presidents

“The nine most terrifying words in the English language are, ‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.'”  —Ronald Reagan

“Fighting battles is like courting girls: those who make the most pretensions and are boldest usually win.”  —Rutherford B. Hayes

“The pay is good and I can walk to work.”  —John F. Kennedy

The President of the United States of America is the most powerful person in the world, the leader of the world’s foremost economic and military power with global interests and an unparalleled global reach. The nation’s GDP is close to a quarter of the world’s total and its military budget is almost as great as the rest of the world’s military expenditure put together. So when U.S. Presidents speak people listen. Since George Washington became the first President of the United States in 1789, 42 men have occupied that powerful position, some more memorably than others. Many have been great orators, whose words have given hope and inspiration to the American people, and even the world, during difficult times; some have had very little of note to say and some have sought to deceive; while others at times have managed to put their feet firmly in their mouths. Illustrated with photographs throughout, this book is a celebration of the political rhetoric, wisdom, humor, and gaffes that have been spoken and written by those 43 Presidents of the United States.
