A New Writing Classroom: Listening, Motivation, and Habits of Mind
In A New Writing Classroom, Patrick Sullivan provides a new generation of teachers a means and a rationale to reconceive their approach to teaching writing, calling into question the discipline’s dependence on argument.
Including secondary writing teachers within his purview, Sullivan advocates a more diverse, exploratory, and flexible approach to writing activities in grades six through thirteen. A New Writing Classroom encourages teachers to pay more attention to research in learning theory, transfer of learning, international models for nurturing excellence in the classroom, and recent work in listening to teach students the sort of dialogic stance that leads to higher-order thinking and more sophisticated communication.
The conventional argumentative essay is often a simplistic form of argument, widely believed to be the most appropriate type of writing in English classes, but other kinds of writing may be more valuable to students and offer more important kinds of cognitive challenges. Focusing on listening and dispositions or “habits of mind” as central elements of this new composition pedagogy, A New Writing Classroom draws not just on composition studies but also on cognitive psychology, philosophy, learning theory, literature, and history, making an exciting and significant contribution to the field.

The Writer’s Atelier Little Book of Writing Affirmations
Writing can be a solitary endeavor, but you are not alone. Take these affirmations day by day and let them help you achieve your goals. Dear Writer, If there’s anything I’ve learned from being an editor, founder of a writing studio, and fellow writer, it’s that having the proper mindset is critical to a successful writing career. I’ve had the pleasure of working with writers around the world, I meet writers from all walks of life at conferences, and there are countless writers who have come through the Writer’s Atelier doors in central Florida. All of us struggle with different areas of craft, but there’s one thing that seems to be an ongoing issue for many of us. That issue, is mindset. The more I speak with the writers at the top of their game, the more I realize that they all share a common thread. They have the correct mindset. That’s not to say that they never falter. The key is that they get back to work. They know in the back of their minds they’ll get through it. They’re able to get back to work because at the end of the day, they have the proper mindset. There are many affirmation books and websites out there, but I wanted to write affirmations for writers. So here it is. Thirty affirmations that will help you get to a positive writing mindset. Write them down. Stick them on your bathroom mirror. Breathe them in. Live them. Love, Racquel Writer’s Atelier Founder

Each one closes their eyes for a moment and clearly affirms & visualizes themselves completing the event flawlessly just before starting. Then they win gold medals and become champions. That’s merely one example of how the real power of affirmation can elevate you above any of life’s challenges.
Life is too short to be exhausted on thousands of everyday anxieties and fears. Sadly, the average person will get to the end of their life and realize that more than half of it was spent struggling with these kind of problems. Because they didn’t know what to do, many of these people never found any satisfaction in life. You can and will become bigger than those struggles by enhancing the energy that already flows within you.
Too often people are held hostage and limited by a cycle of negative thinking and pessimism. This kind of thinking creates a streak of what many choose to call, “bad luck”. I have good news for you. There is no such thing as “bad luck”. This phenomenon is merely a cycle of negative affirmation that must be broken and mended with a fresh regimen of positive affirmation and vision. By repeating and remembering these affirmations in times of difficulty, we transform our rigid affirmations of defeat and intimidation into warm, confident manifestations of the world as we choose it to be.

Keys to Inspiration: A Teacher’s Guide to a Student-Centered Writing Program
Student-centered instruction is the buzzword among today’s educators, yet the teaching of writing is still very top-down. Student-centered should mean student-inspired, and that’s where Keys to Inspiration comes in. The path to a writer’s truth always starts with an emotion, and almost all forms of writing contain at least a trace of emotional DNA. This book shows teachers how to align emotion with subject matter, and it offers them lessons and projects (from challenging writing exercises to larger projects, such as memoir, research reports, and editorials) that resonate with young authors. While Keys to Inspiration focuses sharply on content, it contains an instructive mechanics section and an Appendix of unique word lists (emotion-related words, themed spelling lists, and alternatives to “went” and “said,” to name a few), as well as a few grammar worksheets.
Once motivated, young authors must learn to describe with detail, meddle with metaphor, and mind their mechanics. Veteran writing instructor Steve Ford offers many lessons and exercises that will polish students’ narrative skills, and he alerts teachers to the common spelling, punctuation, and grammar mistakes that young writers need to learn to avoid.
Journal Daily Notebook: Lined Blank Journal Book for writing, 6 x 9, 150 Pages, positive affirmations (One Day At A Time)
Your #1 Journal notebook for writing your Life’s Journey. This blank 150 page journal notebook will jump start your creativity with its minimal design and bright white pages. It can also be used for notes, as a diary, to track your food, exercise or just for writing down important information.
Journaling is an ancient tradition, one that dates back to at least 10th century. Triumphant people throughout history have kept journals. Presidents, artists, and families have maintained them for posterity; other famous figures for their own reasons.
There is increasing evidence to support the idea that journaling has a positive impact on physical well-being. Science has shown that writing about stressful events helps you come to terms with them, thus reducing the force of these stressors on your physical well-being. Scientific evidence supports that journaling provides other unexpected benefits. The act of writing accesses your left brain, which is logical and rational. While your left brain is occupied, your right brain is free to create, discern and feel. In sum, writing removes mental blocks and allows you to use all of your brainpower to better understand yourself, others and the world around you.
