A pair of sisters find themselves at a crossroads in this dazzling new novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Something Borrowed, Where We Belong, and The One & Only. First Comes Love is a story about family, friendship, and the courage to follow your own heart—wherever that may lead.

Growing up, Josie and Meredith Garland shared a loving, if sometimes contentious, relationship. Josie was impulsive, spirited, and outgoing, Meredith hardworking, thoughtful, and reserved. When tragedy strikes, their delicate bond splinters.

Fifteen years later, Josie and Meredith are in their late thirties, following very different paths. Josie, a first grade teacher, is single—and this close to swearing off dating for good. What she wants more than the right guy, however, is to become a mother—a feeling that is heightened when her ex-boyfriend’s daughter is assigned to her class. Determined to have the future she’s always wanted, Josie decides to take matters into her own hands.

On the outside, Meredith is the model daughter with the perfect life. A successful attorney, she’s married to a wonderful man, and together they’re raising a beautiful four-year-old daughter. Yet lately Meredith feels dissatisfied and restless, secretly wondering if she chose the life that was expected of her rather than the one she truly desired.

As the anniversary of their tragedy looms, and painful secrets from the past begin to surface, Josie and Meredith must not only confront the issues that divide them but also come to terms with their own choices. In their journey toward understanding and forgiveness, both sisters discover that they need each other more than they knew—and that in the search for true happiness, love always comes first.

  1. Enjoy! I really enjoy Emily Giffin’s work. I’ve pretty much read all her books. Giffin is a great story teller with the uncanny ability to make you forget you are reading fiction. If you enjoy her other books, you’ll enjoy this one as well. First Comes Love is a touching story about two sisters still dealing with the loss of a brother 15 years later. Enjoy!

  2. A story and a life told in two parts Meredith and Josie have known the before and after of when tragedy strikes a family that change them and every decision they make for the rest of their lives. Meredith choose the path well worn with a career, husband, child and the safety stability brings but lately doubting that the decision she made was the right one after all. Josie has chased her dreams but stayed realistic in her life choices always dancing on the edge of acceptability but knowing she crossed it once and would never do…

  3. Time is a tricky thing Emily Giffin probably holds the title as the American queen of women’s fiction. I enjoyed most of her books, however, absolutely loved Something Borrowed and The Heart of the Matter. “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown”, as it is probably next to impossible to crank out consistently well written books one after another. Unfortunately, her last two books began to show some wear and tear and were less than stellar. I am happy to report the First Comes Love, is ever so…
