The Farmhouse: New Inspiration for the Classic American Home

Farmhouses evoke nostalgic memories–real or imagined–of a simpler life and a deep, nourishing connection to the seasons and the land. While most of us don’t live that way anymore, we all share a longing for the values that this classic American house form represents.
So what makes a true American farmhouse? A farmhouse is intimately connected to the land and all its seasons, dominates a community of buildings, and is built to last using natural, indigenous materials. These are the core qualities of the farmhouse style, whether old or new.
From a working farm on Martha’s Vineyard to a horse ranch in Washington State, this remarkable collection of 20 new and remodeled farmhouses celebrates the best American farmhouses built in the past five years. Over 300 photographs beautifully illustrate these homes, and the accompanying site and floor plans, historical sidebars, and up-close details add depth to this rich collection.
With this ground breaking book, America’s quintessential house style is reinvented for the 21st-century family.

Automatic or Spirit Writing, With Other Psychic Experiences (Classic Reprint)

In the interest of truth only have I prepared this book, and have herein given a plain, unvarnished statement of facts as they occurred, in the exact words of the communications as I have them in the original manuscripts. In most of these, especially after the first year, I wrote down at the time the questions asked by Mr. Underwood and myself, directly over the replies, so that I know without doubt to what the answeis referred. In the first year, however, I sometimes omitted writing the questions asked orally, and in regard to such had to trust to memory, or infer from the answer what those questions were. I f, therefore, here and there occur trifling mistakes or repetitions they are due to this fact, and to the further J-act of my having earlier written out, so that they could more easily be read, many of the communications, in re-writing which for this volume I have consulted both the original manuscripts as written by spirit power, and my own copies. One thing, arising from my experience after the publication of the A rena article I wish to make clear in this Preface.

The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying: The Spiritual Classic & International Bestseller

“A magnificent achievement. In its power to touch the heart, to awaken consciousness, [The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying] is an inestimable gift.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

A newly revised and updated edition of the internationally bestselling spiritual classic, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, written by Sogyal Rinpoche, is the ultimate introduction to Tibetan Buddhist wisdom. An enlightening, inspiring, and comforting manual for life and death that the New York Times calls, “The Tibetan equivalent of [Dante’s] The Divine Comedy,” this is the essential work that moved Huston Smith, author of The World’s Religions, to proclaim, “I have encountered no book on the interplay of life and death that is more comprehensive, practical, and wise.”

In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. –Brian Bruya

The Sayings of Confucius: (Timeless Classic Books)

Promoting virtues such as filial devotion, compassion, loyalty, and propriety, these dialogues between the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius and his disciples comprise the crux of Confucianism. Put faithfulness and truth first; have no friends unlike thyself; be not ashamed to mend thy faults. Wisdom has no doubts; love does not fret; the bold have no fears. To rank the effort above the prize may be called love. There may be men that do things without knowing why. I do not. To hear much, pick out the good and follow it; to see much and think it over; this comes next to wisdom. When a bird is dying his notes are sad; when man is dying his words are good.
