Inspirations: A Collection of Confessions and Revelations

Have you ever found yourself wondering if there was any more to this life? Have you ever questioned God’s plan for you, your purpose, or destiny? Of course you have. When I asked those questions, the answer that I was given threw me for a loop. The answer was so unexpected and out of my comfort zone that I spent many years wondering if I had heard the correct answer. Our main purpose is to worship and glorify God. God inspired me to glorify Him in this manner.

Inspirations is a book that started as a simple exercise in expressing thoughts, not necessarily meant to be shared, but as a vehicle to let new emotions and new ideals flow from my heart. When I began this journey, I was both new to poetry and a brand-new Christian. I had never had the desire to write nor had any idea how far the process of writing would take me. It was several years of expression through writing, and sharing with others, before I realized I had the beginnings of a book. Even then I had no concept of the height, depth, and width of this project, or how far God could take me in such an uncomfortable and untenable position.

All forms of art are born out of some manner of inspiration. This collection of poetry has had its share of unusual types of inspiration, from cartoons and movies to other authors and people in my everyday life, even situations in which I found myself that would show the glory and majesty of our Lord. The subject matter of all these poems, while most are individually inspired, can be separated into two categories, either confession or revelation. There is truth within these pages, truth about my life and I would be willing to guess, at least some truth about your life as well.

My prayer is that the words within these pages would first serve to glorify God and second serve to inspire you to do something, perhaps outside of your comfort zone, so that you will rely on God’s strength and knowledge. Let us remain humble, by getting out of our own way, and letting Jesus shine through us.

Waiter to the Rich and Shameless: Confessions of a Five Star Beverly Hills Server

A down-and-out musician chops off his hair to become a server at the top of the Hollywood food chain, discovering a cloistered world of money, fame, bad behavior, and intrigue.

Waiter to the Rich and Shameless is not just a peek into the secretive inner workings of a legendary five-star restaurant; it is not just a celebrity tell-all or a scathing corporate analysis. It is a top-tier waiter’s personal coming-of-age story, an intimate look into the complicated challenges of serving in the country’s most elite, Hollywood-centric dining room while fighting to maintain a sense of self and purpose.

Of the many millions of food service workers around the globe, only a tiny number ever ascend to a top-level position at a world-renowned restaurant catering to iconic celebrities, moguls, and politicians. As one of those select few, Paul (“Pauli”) Hartford is the first waiter to open the door into a cloistered, coveted world of money, fame, bad behavior, and intrigue. He peels back the veneer of civility and culture at the nation’s most preeminent celebrity hangout, the Cricket Room, in Beverly Hills, California. He exposes the epic human foibles of its elite clientele, the dining room’s corrupt corporate culture, its clandestine culinary practices, and the heartbreaking struggles of its beleaguered waitstaff.

This keenly-observed story also traverses Pauli’s 10-year evolution from a jaded, party-hungry rock musician who moonlights as a bartender, into a snobbish and pretentious waiter, and finally into a polished and sophisticated server who takes his job so seriously that it drives him to the brink of illness. Pauli finds himself at first seduced by his famous guests’ glamour and self-indulgence, then accustomed to it, and finally appalled by it.

For obvious reasons, some details and specifics about the real Cricket Room have been cleverly disguised, but discerning listeners will easily connect the dots.

The Irreverent Activist: Few random affirmations and confessions

The Irreverent Activist is a collection of observations about topics ranging from freedom and justice to fate, faith, and love by Syrian pro-democracy activist Ammar Abdulhamid—a man who belongs to the category of people who “can only be inspired to seek out the light on account of their continuous faceoff with all that is dark.”

Split into two sections, “Book One: Heretical Affirmations” contains fifty eight singular thoughts expressing the author’s philosophy that we need to remain grounded in reality as it is in order to change it—even though it may not feel good. The heresy lies in the idea that we need to derive meaning from the fight itself, and face the ugly realities of the world rather than ignoring negativity in favor of positive thinking and feel-good platitudes.

Then, with an intriguing, yet unsettling, change in tone and structure, “Book Two: Abel’s Confessions” offers ninety poetic musings illustrating Abdulhamid’s tortured inner turmoil, his yearning to transcend his shortcomings and contradictions to do some good in the world. This cathartic exposure of his frailties and vulnerabilities complements the first section of the book by inspiring us to never give up the struggle for human rights, no matter how daunting the task may be.
