On the Edge: The Art of High-Impact Leadership
On the Edge is an engaging leadership manual that provides concrete insights garnered from various extreme environments ranging from Mt Everest to the South Pole. By reflecting on the lessons learned from her various expeditions, author Alison Levine makes the case that the leadership principles that apply in extreme adventure sport also apply in today’s extreme business environments. Both settings require you to be able to make crucial decisions on the spot when the conditions around you are far from perfect. Your survival -and the survival of your team-depend on it. On the Edge provides a framework to help people scale whatever big peaks they aspire to climb-be they literal or figurative-by offering practical, humorous, and often unorthodox advice about how to grow as a leader.
The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership: Follow Them and People Will Follow You
What would happen if a top expert with more than forty years of leadership experience was willing to distill everything he had learned about leadership into a handful of life-changing principles just for you? It could change your life. John C. Maxwell has done exactly that in the new 10th Anniversary Edition of The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. He has combined the insights learned from his forty-plus years of leadership successes and mistakes with observations from the worlds of business, politics, sports, religion, and military conflict. The result is a revealing study of leadership delivered only as a communicator like Maxwell can. Find out why . . . ~ Abraham Lincoln went from militia captain to private during the Black Hawk War ~ Lance Armstrong’s Tour de France wins were made possible because of good leadership ~ So many people lost their lives or got stranded during the Katrina disaster in New Orleans ~ The CEO of the world’s ninth-largest retailer has a no-frills office, answers his own phone, and takes a salary that puts him in the bottom 10 percent of CEOs ~ Henry Ford nearly sent his own company into bankruptcy ~ The Law of the Lid is the most important leadership principle you will ever learn All these issues and more are explained in this revised and updated The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Like them or not, the laws of leadership govern your personal and organizational effectiveness. “Everything rises and falls on leadership,” says Maxwell. “These laws carry consequences with them. I’ve seen them at work in more than ninety countries around the world. Apply the laws and people will follow you. Violate or ignore them, and you will not be able to lead others. But here’s the good news: every one of the laws can be learned.”

Featured Guest Review by Marshall Goldsmith
Marshall Goldsmith has been recognized by almost every major business publication as one of America’s leading executive educators and coaches. He is the author or co-editor of more than 32 books, including the New York Times best sellers What Got You Here Won’t Get You There and Mojo.
Twenty-five years after the first edition was published, The Leadership Challenge by Jim Kouzes and Barry Posner is still my choice for the best research-based book ever written in the field of leadership. It is a classic, and I recommend it to all of my clients.
The Leadership Challenge is written for real leaders, who today face some of the toughest organizational challenges we’ve ever encountered. And, it provides practical, real-world advice based on Jim’s and Barry’s extensive global research that is indispensable for leaders at all levels.
I always refer leaders to this book, because although my Ph.D. is in Organizational Behavior, my undergraduate background is in mathematics. And, I respect people who gather real facts! In developing the Leadership Practices Inventory, which is possibly the world’s most widely respected tool for 360° leadership feedback, Jim and Barry have thoroughly reviewed input from tens of thousands of respondents. They’ve then used this data to form sound conclusions about what works–and what doesn’t work–in terms of leadership behavior.
The central theme of The Leadership Challenge is that leadership is for everyone. It can be learned, but, let’s face it, it’s not easy. The Leadership Challenge is based upon learnings from leaders at all levels–and shows how “regular people” can make a huge, positive difference in their organizations. It is written in a way that can help executives, mid-managers, first-line supervisors, project leaders–and even individual contributors–better understand how they can lead and immediately apply what they have learned in their work.
For example, Jim and Barry asked managers about their clarity around their personal values as well as around the values of their organizations. These managers were also asked about their level of commitment to the organization, their level of motivation and productivity, job satisfaction, and so on. To me, what they found is fascinating! Leaders with the highest levels of commitment are those who are clearest about their own personal values. Clarity about personal values was more prevalent in a positive workplace attitude and level of engagement than was clarity around organizational values. In doing the research for my recent book, Mojo, I found something similar to be true as well: People who find happiness and meaning at home are more likely to also find happiness and meaning at work.
Finally, for those of you reading this book now, I’d highly recommend that you put what you read here into practice. This book can help you lead in such a way that your organization will become a better place for you, your managers, employees, and colleagues-to-be. At the same time, if you implement what you learn here, you’ll make a positive difference in not only your organization, but also in your own life and in the lives of those whom you lead.
Strengths Based Leadership: Great Leaders, Teams, and Why People Follow
For decades, Gallup scientists have researched the topic of leadership. They’ve surveyed a million work teams, conducted more than 50,000 in-depth interviews with leaders, and even interviewed 20,000 followers to ask what they admired in the most important leader in their life. The results of that research are unveiled in Strengths-Based Leadership. Using Gallup’s discoveries, authors Tom Rath and Barry Conchie identify three keys to being an effective leader and use firsthand accounts from highly successful leaders including the founder of Teach for America and the president of The Ritz-Carlton to show how each person’s unique talents can drive their success. A new version of Gallup’s popular StrengthsFinder assessment helps readers discover their own special gifts, and specific strategies show them how to lead with their top five talents. Loaded with novel research, inspiring stories, and actionable ideas, Strengths-Based Leadership offers a new roadmap for leading people toward a better future.
Secrets of A Strong Mind: What My Years As An FBI Counterintelligence Agent Taught Me About Leadership and Empowerment – And How To Make It Work For You (Volume 1)
Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you needed to be stronger willed? Do you want to find better ways to overcome the obstacles in your life? If the answer is yes to either of these questions, this is the book for you. We will all face adversity of different kinds this year, and the way in which we embrace it will determine the direction that life takes us. The plans we have for life frequently get derailed with hardships and disappointments. Now, with Secrets of A Strong Mind, we can learn how to embrace challenges and empower the leader in us. Secrets of A Strong Mind reveals the six core components needed to move through barriers so we can lead our life from a place of personal strength. Former FBI agent LaRae Quy spent over twenty years working as an FBI undercover and counterintelligence agent. Her job was to identify foreign spies who were operating in the United States, find out what they were stealing and stop them, assess whether they possessed the type of information the U.S. needed, and if they did, find ways to persuade them to work for our government. LaRae shares the skills needed to survive as an undercover agent. We may never need to talk ourselves out of a desperate situation with criminals or spies, but getting people to trust us is important in business and personal life. She reveals how the same tools she used in the world of spying and counterintelligence to survive in environments of hostility, deception, and fear can help us navigate through the confusion and duplicity we find in relationships, investments, and business. Secrets of A Strong Mind shows how we can view failure and obstacles as opportunities to earn new problem-solving skills. With real-life stories, practical exercises, and inspiring tactics, Secrets of A Strong Mind teaches the skills needed to survive and take full advantage of life. LaRae provides the tools for excavating the significance of our own stories and memories to help us uncover the unknown about ourselves. This discovery will be a new strength. The learning process will not fatigue us; instead, it will invigorate us. This enables us to keep our eyes on the goals and not on the obstacles. Secrets of A Strong Mind will empower the leader in you to live with the mental toughness needed to overcome life’s obstacles and achieve your goals. It is an ideal book for discussion groups, church groups, and corporate off-sites.
