Risk Factors The risk factors for the different types of diabetes are behavioral, environmental and genetic. The onset of type 1 diabetes in childhood points to a genetic predisposition. Indeed research into the clinical population has revealed variations in genes involved in immune cell function and regulation 12,13, as well as genes encoding insulin 14. Environmental factors in type 1 diabetes show indirect evidence implicating viral and bacterial infection as triggering aberrant immune responses, but more work needs to be done before direct conclusions can be made14. Another way environmental agents can affect immune function is through nonpathogenic commensal bacteria – the population of bacteria that live in the gut and are involved in our physiology. These commensal bacteria populate the gut in newborns and they come to exist in a balanced system with the body’s immune cells – regulating the immune system to some extent. They also respond to environmental stimuli including ingested food, therefore their potential impact on diabetic symptoms is currently under investigation 14. Type 2 diabetes has a strong behavioral component because it is often linked to obesity and a lifestyle lacking physical activity 15–17. Obesity is a state of metabolic dysfunction that results from an imbalance in the amount of calories consumed and the amount actually used. Two major consequences the body experiences with obesity are hyperlipidemia (abnormally high levels of lipids) and hypertension (abnormally high blood pressure). Obesity is also associated with hyperinsulinemia and insulin insensitivity.

How to Live on 24 Hours a Day: The Original Guide to Living Life to the Full

Originally published in 1910, this guide offers down-to-earth, practical advice about how to make the most of your day and how to strike the work-life balance—an issue still at the forefront of modern society’s concerns

As you look back on the year that has just past, do you feel as though you spent another 12 months merely existing instead of truly living? Do you often go to bed at night with an anxious, sinking feeling that you wasted away another precious day? The important lesson, according to Arnold Bennett’s guide, is to commit to carving out some time each day to do things that will really enrich your life and help you progress. Investing all your hours in a job you dislike; your routine consisting of getting up, going to work, coming home, unwinding, and going to bed—Bennett argues that this is not living but simply existing. Bennett’s solution is to make the most of the time either side of working hours, the commute, the evening hours, and that golden time, the weekend! Time can be spent in various pursuits, from literature, enjoying of the arts, or even just time spent in reflection. This pioneering and original lifestyle and time management guide is succinctly and cleverly written in an easy-to-read and narrative style that readers will enjoy and find as useful today as it was 100 years ago.

Dying To Live: From Despair and Death to Freedom and Joy (The Self-Empowerment Trilogy) (Volume 1)

Many of us experience depression and fear more often than we would like to, many of us feel dissatisfaction with the unhappiness or anxiety in which we habitually find ourselves, but we don’t know what to do about changing our mental condition and conditioning. Dying To Live isn’t just a blueprint of a struggle toward maturity, it is a blueprint for the integration of body, mind and spirit. It is the story of how weakness can become strength, how our limitations can be transcended as we learn to love and to trust ourselves and the other people in our lives. Tolly doesn’t give us answers in Dying To Live; he tells us about the answers he has found for himself. I believe these can help and inspire others to find their own answers.
