Artfelt Inspiration: Let Your Freak Fly!

PASSION, CONNECTION, AWARENESS. Are you feeling empty…on a rat wheel, meeting responsibilities, or barely so, and wondering if this is all there is to life? With the dawn of the Industrial and Digital Ages, our culture has become increasingly disconnected from our inner selves, resulting in depression, addiction, and anxiety being at an all-time high. Laurie Ritchie has been there. She was the classic “do-gooder” on a path of self-destruction until she found the value of expressive arts. Initially a mental health occupational therapist, Laurie ached for “something more,” realizing she’d been drawn to the arts herentire life. Self-described as a “schizophrenic art enthusiast”—loving many forms, but not traditionally gifted at any—Laurie initially resisted with the typical excuses she hears from her clients at Whole Arts Connection: “I’m not an artist. I don’t know what to do with that blank page.” She quickly found out—at first through writing and then later through expressive arts therapy—that art was the fast track to unveiling passion, deep connection, self-awareness, and a way to remove all the stumbling blocks along the way. Artfelt Inspiration will inspire you to unleash your innermost creative self, and reconnect with that “inner freak”, just waiting to be set free. Each of the 12 chapters offers inspiration through art, poetry, storyand creative exercises, helping you re-discover hidden talents, your unique beauty, and awakened spiritual connection. If you are ready to “Let Your Freak Fly,” this book is for you!

Rose Cumming: Design Inspirations

Rose Cumming was the most flamboyant and exciting of the so-called Great Lady Decorators who invented the field of professional decorating and interior design in the early twentieth century. Flavored by surrealism and suffused with drama, her interiors were sumptuous, mixing bold colors and patterns. Her own library had emerald-green walls, a peacock -blue satin sofa, and scarlet japanned chairs.

Cumming’s famous New York decorating and antiques shop became a stopping point for celebrated personalities such as the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Andy Warhol, Rudolf Nureyev, and Jacqueline Onassis. Encompassing styles from gothic, Venetian, and Austrian baroque to early Oriental furniture, Cumming would add glittering chandeliers, birdcages, and fine carpets. Her glamorous style was reminiscent of film sets, and Marlene Dietrich and Norma Shearer were among her clients.

This book, the first on Cumming, is a richly illustrated volume of a great American artist, whose influence is manifest in the ongoing production of Cumming-designed fabrics and wallpapers. Rose Cumming will inspire the interior designer and home decorator, both professional and amateur alike.

Gifts of Love and Inspiration

Inspire – v. mid 14c., to inhale enspiren, “to fill (the mind, heart, etc..)” Latin inspirare “inflame” Irene Sugar Hamilton Rieck’s primary art form was fabrics. She sewed beautiful gowns for the officers clubs at every duty station. Each dress embellished with lace, sequins, bugle beads, gathers, pleats, belts, tulle. My clothes too were things of beauty. All the above times two. My sister and I were dressed exactly the same in reverse with bows, collars, tucks, embroidery. Each dress meticulously sewn and ironed – too many to count. Innumerable, exquisite, immaculate, extraordinary quilts – some just to fill time and given to Salvation Army. Some tributes and memorials given to Sugar’s nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. At the One Woman Quilt Show, February 14, 2014, fifty-three of Sugar’s quilts were exhibited. Some were gleaned from Sugar’s house, but most were brought proudly by the owner to the exhibition. The City of Brownfield provided the venue, advertised the event, and built the quilt frames. Sugar did these things and more by example. We have a small collection of her haiku assembled here for your joy. And we have her inspiration.

Rethinking the Bible: Inerrancy, Preaching, Inspiration, Authority, Formation, Archaeology, Postmodernism, and More

Rethinking the Bible explains Scripture in ways that make sense and deepen Christian faith. Essays in the book ask and answer questions such as… What is the primary function of the Bible? Can the Bible be trusted if it has errors? What does “divine inspiration” mean if humans wrote the Bible? How should preachers use the Bible today? Does the Bible mean now what it meant when written? How has archaeology changed the way we interpret the Bible? Should the Dead Sea Scrolls affect our view of the Bible? What authority does the Bible have matters of science? Is the Bible a container of truth statements or tool for formation? How should we handle contradictions we find in the Bible? Should postmodernism influence how we read the Bible? The standard answers to questions like these no longer make sense. Many people today seek a more adequate way to understand what the Bible is and does. Those who ask deep questions about Scripture want plausible answers. This book offers answers to questions about the Bible that make sense in our time.
