Light the Dark: Writers on Creativity, Inspiration, and the Artistic Process
A stunning guide to finding creative inspiration and how it can illuminate your life, your work, and your art—from Stephen King, Junot Díaz, Elizabeth Gilbert, Amy Tan, Khaled Hosseini, Roxane Gay, Neil Gaiman, and many more acclaimed writers
What inspires you? That’s the simple, but profound question posed to forty-six renowned authors in LIGHT THE DARK. Each writer begins with a favorite passage from a novel, a song, a poem—something that gets them started and keeps them going with the creative work they love. From there, incredible lessons and stories of life-changing encounters with art emerge, like how sneaking books into his job as a night security guard helped Khaled Hosseini learn that nothing he creates will ever be truly finished. Or how a college reading assignment taught Junot Díaz that great art can be a healing conversation, and an unexpected poet led Elizabeth Gilbert to embrace an unyielding optimism, even in the face of darkness. LIGHT THE DARK collects the best of The Atlantic’s much-acclaimed “By Heart” series edited by Joe Fassler and adds brand new pieces, each one paired with a striking illustration. Here is a guide to creative living and writing in the vein of Daily Rituals, Bird by Bird, and Big Magic for anyone who wants to learn how great writers find inspiration—and how to find some of your own.

The Light of Life: The Cycle of Galand, Book 4
After a year of fighting across three different lands, Dante and Blays have finally brought Gladdic to justice – and in the process, they’ve unleashed a horror beyond all reckoning.
The enemy is known as the White Lich. He is ancient. He is immensely powerful. And Gladdic believes he will soon enslave all of Tanar Atain.
Their only chance to defeat him is to strike fast, before the lich has regained his power. But attacking him directly would be suicide. Instead, Gladdic has an alternative. Once upon a time, the lich was human, with a mortal body. Gladdic believes that original body is still out there, hidden somewhere in the swamps.
If they can find it and kill it, then the lich should die with it. But if they fail, the White Lich will rip the souls from the people of Tanar Atain – and turn his gaze on the rest of the world.
Seven Steps into Angel Light: A Journey of Self-Discovery and Spiritual Empowerment
Angels appear in almost every culture, faith and religion, since the dawn of mankind. In this rapidly changing world of uncertainty, one thing is for sure: a universal source of guidance and love is easily accessible. We have been given the gift of angels. A gift for us to accept with gratitude, or to ignore. The choice is ours.
A highly practical self-help book that draws on the universal power and energy of angels, taking readers on a seven-step journey to reconnect with themselves and live happier, more fulfilled lives.
Inspired by and based on Chrissie’s popular seven-module home-study course ‘Educating Heart & Soul: A Journey in Spiritual Self-Discovery’, this book engages with the powerful energies and qualities of the seven Archangels with which angel expert Chrissie Astell has been working for over fifteen years: Gabriel, Jophiel, Michael, Raphael, Chamuel, Zadkiel and Uriel.
These are the Archangels from the Seven Rays as taught by the Theosophists in the early twentieth century, which represent the seven major types of Light or divine qualities that make up the universe. The content of the book will complement Chrissie’s course, with a maximum of 20-25% content overlap, yet will also stand alone as an excellent means of spiritual self-development; people doing the course will be encouraged to buy the book and people who read the book are likely to want to follow it up with the course.
After an initial introduction telling the author’s story and explaining the power of the Archangels and the symbolism of the number seven, seven main chapters will then lead readers on a journey of self-discovery through the main positive qualities related to the angels‘ communication, inspiration, protection, self-healing, love, transformation and, finally, peace.
Q & A features will appear throughout each chapter, drawing on questions frequently asked by Chrissie’s students; case studies will also appear where appropriate.
The book will allow readers to:
–learn about Angelic Beings, Ascended Masters and Spirit Guides
–connect with and ‘step into’ the different energies of each of the great Archangels
–develop deeper self-knowledge and wisdom
–experience enhanced creativity
–open up to pure, unconditional love
–transmute negative feelings into positive energy
–recognize, honour and respect all individual journeys
–use angelic healing energies and raise consciousness
–use techniques for protection and grounding
–gain knowledge of different types of mystical and religious beliefs
–feel an increased sense of inner peace
–encourage others to open their hearts to forgiveness and healing
Written in a warm, inclusive style, it will guide and support readers throughout their journey, leaving them feeling empowered, more whole and more at ease with their place in the world at large.
Be Light in Grief: Conscious grieving for self-empowerment, growth & healing
Grief is one of the most challenging aspects in our everyday lives and we grieve not only for the death of a loved one, but for any loss, real or anticipated. Grief affects us holistically – emotionally, physically, mentally, socially and spiritually – and when left unhealed can lead to illness. This new paradigm of energy medicine as integrative medicine is about working with an individual’s higher coherent frequencies to re-ignite life force energy so a person may reclaim experiences of joy, appreciation, and newfound vitality. Conscious grieving helps us to surrender into grief rather than collapse under it, meeting suffering as the light.

All the Light We Cannot See: A Novel
Over two and a half years on the New York Times bestseller list and winner of the Pulitzer Prize, the stunningly beautiful and captivating story about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France during World War II—now available from Encore!
Marie-Laure lives in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where her father works. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel.
In a mining town in Germany, Werner Pfennig, an orphan, grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find that brings them news and stories from places they have never seen or imagined. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments and is enlisted to use his talent to track down the resistance. Deftly interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another.
Doerr’s “stunning sense of physical detail and gorgeous metaphors” (San Francisco Chronicle) are dazzling. Ten years in the writing, a National Book Award finalist, All the Light We Cannot See is a magnificent, deeply moving novel from a writer “whose sentences never fail to thrill” (Los Angeles Times).
An Amazon Best Book of the Month, May 2014: Does the world need yet another novel about WWII? It does when the novel is as inventive and beautiful as this one by Anthony Doerr. In fact, All the Light We Cannot See–while set mostly in Germany and France before and during the war–is not really a “war novel”. Yes, there is fear and fighting and disappearance and death, but the author’s focus is on the interior lives of his two characters. Marie Laure is a blind 14-year-old French girl who flees to the countryside when her father disappears from Nazi-occupied Paris. Werner is a gadget-obsessed German orphan whose skills admit him to a brutal branch of Hitler Youth. Never mind that their paths don’t cross until very late in the novel, this is not a book you read for plot (although there is a wonderful, mysterious subplot about a stolen gem). This is a book you read for the beauty of Doerr’s writing– “Abyss in her gut, desert in her throat, Marie-Laure takes one of the cans of food…”–and for the way he understands and cherishes the magical obsessions of childhood. Marie Laure and Werner are never quaint or twee. Instead they are powerful examples of the way average people in trying times must decide daily between morality and survival. –Sara Nelson
