Everything Happens for a Reason: And Other Lies I’ve Loved

A divinity professor and young mother with a Stage IV cancer diagnosis explores the pain and joy of living without certainty.

Thirty-five-year-old Kate Bowler was a professor at the school of divinity at Duke, and had finally had a baby with her childhood sweetheart after years of trying, when she began to feel jabbing pains in her stomach. She lost 30 pounds, chugged antacid, and visited doctors for three months before she was finally diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer.

As she navigates the aftermath of her diagnosis, Kate pulls the listener deeply into her life, which is populated with a colorful, often hilarious collection of friends, pastors, parents, and doctors, and shares her laser-sharp reflections on faith, friendship, love, and death. She wonders why suffering makes her feel like a loser and explores the burden of positivity. Trying to relish the time she still has with her son and husband, she realizes she must change her habit of skipping to the end and planning the next move. A historian of the “American prosperity gospel” – the creed of the mega-churches that promises believers a cure for tragedy, if they just want it badly enough – Bowler finds that, in the wake of her diagnosis, she craves these same “outrageous certainties”. She wants to know why it’s so hard to surrender control over that which you have no control. She contends with the terrifying fact that, even for her husband and child, she is not the lynchpin of existence, and that even without her, life will go on.

Kate Bowler is warm, witty, and ruthless, and, like Paul Kalanithi, one of the talented, courageous few who can articulate the grief she feels as she contemplates her own mortality.

Know You Are Loved: Inspirational Notes to My Daughter on Her Journey to Recovery, Rediscovery and Self-Empowerment

Know You Are Loved is a touching, graphically-illustrated, biographical memoir of inspirational quotes, coupled with the author’s own motivational messages, that stress the importance of self-love and personal empowerment. The author made each of these messages into cards that she mailed daily to her daughter who had been court-ordered to spend nine months in a residential alcoholic/drug-abuse rehab facility. For the first few months in rehab, her daughter was not allowed to have any outside contact, with one exception: she could receive letters. Sending a daily inspirational message of love was the author’s way of supporting her daughter during her rehabilitation and recovery process by letting her know that she was loved. This book explains the author’s process and includes 230 inspirational graphics she designed.

Although these cards were specifically made for her daughter in rehab, each message has a universal appeal: that self-love is a necessary component of personal empowerment. It is hoped that this book will be an inspiration to everyone who needs to incorporate the self-love messages into their own life. It is also hoped it will inspire those who have a loved one in rehab or prison with ideas of how they can support their loved one through some simple reminders that they are loved and not forgotten. Simply being reminded of the love and support of family and friends can make a huge difference in their rehabilitation, recovery, and journey toward self-love and empowerment.

To be loved by you: No by me

Who am I? I am the masterpiece of my Father can’t you see. Handmade just the way He wanted me to be. There’s nothing that I would change about myself because I am fearfully and wonderfully made in the eyes of my craftsman. You may not like what you see but I love how the Master created me. You will never find another like me. I am unique! I am a designer’s original. I am who God called me to be. Sorry no duplicates can be made from this mode. There’s only one and that’s me the designer’s original that you see. That’s why I love me. As you read this book think about who God made you to be and guess what you too are a designer’s original just like me. Never allow anyone to tell you who you are unless it’s the Master who created and called you from a far. Jeremiah 1:5 says I knew you before you were formed in your mother’s womb. I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations. So arise my beautiful princesses and queens and allow God to show you the plan that He has for your life. Jeremiah 29:11 says For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. To all of my beautiful princesses and queens, look up your future is so much brighter because God is bringing you forth from behind the scenes.

Losing A Loved One: Quotes and advice on handling the heartbreak

The idea for this book of poems, quotes, and advice came after I lost two of my close friends to suicide within a month of each other. The overwhelming array of emotions that I have felt in the time since has inspired me to provide others who are grieving with comforting words and advice that may help them through it. I’ve put together some things that I’ve found have given me comfort and faith during such a tough time. I’ve also tried giving advice based off of my experience with handling the devastation that comes with losing someone special. Hopefully this helps, even just the slightest bit. Never forget that everything will get better, just give it time.

Uninvited: Living Loved When You Feel Less Than, Left Out, and Lonely

The enemy wants us to feel rejected…left out, lonely, and less than. When we allow him to speak lies through our rejection, he pickpockets our purpose. Cripples our courage. Dismantles our dreams. And blinds us to the beauty of Christ’s powerful love.

In Uninvited, Lysa shares her own deeply personal experiences with rejection―from the incredibly painful childhood abandonment by her father to the perceived judgment of the perfectly toned woman one elliptical over.

With biblical depth, gut-honest vulnerability, and refreshing wit, Lysa helps readers:

Release the desire to fall apart or control the actions of others by embracing God-honoring ways to process their hurt.Know exactly what to pray for the next ten days to steady their soul and restore their confidence.Overcome the two core fears that feed our insecurities by understanding the secret of belonging.Stop feeling left out and start believing that “set apart” does not mean “set aside.”End the cycle of perceived rejection by refusing to turn a small incident into a full blown issue.
